Kirk Mitchell
Kirk Mitchell, DPA, MBA, MSc, CHE
Kirk Mitchell has been an Associate Faculty member at RRU since 2006. He has been teaching at the university level since 1985 and has been teaching online since 1999. Kirk currently teaches with Graduate and Undergraduate students in the following:
- Associate Faculty with Graduate Certificate in Health Systems Leadership at Royal Roads University
- Clinical Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of BC since 1985, teaching in the MHA Program.
- Health & Business Stream Coordinator for the Master of Arts in Leadership at Trinity Western University since 2003
- Instructor in Health Management in the School of Health Sciences at the BC Institute of Technology since 1995, teaching quality improvement/patient safety, Canadian health systems overview and leading the capstone integrative project course.
Background
Kirk lives in White Rock, BC (south of Vancouver, on the coast and just north of the US border) with his wife. Kirk has served since 2005 as the part- time Executive Director for the Western Healthcare Improvement Network in BC, an organization of individuals and organizations that seek to implement and execute sustainable knowledge transfer in support of health system improvements.
Kirk also is leading the development and implementation of the Trinity Western University’s servant leadership based Master of Arts in Leadership program for China. The first students in China will be enrolled under the newly created Cypress Leadership Institute based in Beijing and begin courses in 2009.
Other activities include:
- Health policy and synthesis research projects for different organizations across Canada
- Member of the editorial board for Management Forum, published by the Canadian College of Health Services Executives.
- Regional Systems surveyor for the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (currently on leave in 2008 due to China project).
Work experience includes health planning and administration roles since 1978, including experience in public health, teaching hospitals, management consulting, community hospitals, long term care and mental health services. Kirk’s present consulting work is as a strategic leadership consultant, with a focus on both business and health organizations, creating systems and processes that are client centered, evidence based and outcome focused.
