Tamara Gillis, EdD, ABC
I've worked in a number of communication settings in nonprofit advocacy organizations, direct marketing, a health care corporation, and in higher education communication administration before tackling teaching. I continue as a communication consultant and faculty member today. I am very involved in international education. My education includes a bachelor’s degree in English, a master’s degree in communication studies, and a doctorate in education. I worked full-time while completing the master’s degree and doctorate. My work experiences regularly influence my teaching content and style.
Today I teach communication research and specialize in corporate communication -- mostly internal communication and change management. I am also an active writer and researcher. Much of my work has been published by the IABC. I continue as a communication consultant. Most recently, I had a book published, I have been involved with the IABC’s Executive Accreditation Seminar at RRU, and I’m developing a new academic assessment model.
Outside of my work, which is a passion for me, I am involved in my local community through the Chamber of Commerce. Investment art and ballroom dancing are two extra-curricular activities that keep me busy. My dog and cats easily distract me from my work.
My students often say I'm tough on them because I hold them to professional standards. I get a lot of fan mail after they graduate in which they thank me for holding them to those professional standards. Those values give them an advantage in the job market. Otherwise, I see what happens in the learning process as a conversation built by both students and instructors. We both have something to learn from one another.
